LEX - FAQs

Frequently asked questions about LEX - The LDAP Explorer:
When i want to buy a LEX license online and go to the software shop, it seems to be a web page on a different web server, something like "https://secure.shareit.com/....". The look and feel is still similar to the original LEX web site. Is this some kind of pishing?
Not at all. When you go to purchase a license, we redirect you to our online order and payment provider Digital River GmbH (share-it!) - a wellknown webshop service provider for software developer. Your order will be processed over a secure connection and you personal data will not be given to anyone else!
Is the online purchase the only way to acquire a LEX license? I need a quote before buying and can make a purchase only on account.
Generally, there is no problem to acquire a Lex license by order on account. If necessary, we will send you an appropriate offer before. Please contact the mail address license@ldapexplorer.com license@ldapexplorer.com in such cases.

The setup failed because the ".NET Framework 2.0 Runtime" is missing on my computer. What is this and where can i get it?

You can download this runtime environment for free from Microsoft's site your want to run the LDAP Browser with an older Windows version:

The .NET Framework runtime engine is pre-installed on every Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 2008, so you can use the LDAP client here without having to install any other runtime environment. Please note that the operating systems has to be updated with all hotfixes to have the correct .NET Framework version installed.
Is there a native LEX version which can be run on Linux?
No. LEX - The LDAP Explorer was developed as a native Windows application for .NET Framework 2.0. If you want to run the application on a Linux box, you have to use virtualistion software which makes a virtual Windows available - like VMWare. Another possibility is to use a Windows environment and library emulator which enables Windows executables to run directly in Linux - like Wine. We didn't tested LEX with Wine (yet).
Is there a native LEX version which can be run on MAX OS?

Is there a portable version of LEX which can be simply run without installing the software?
LEX can be run directly on all Windows versions where the .NET Framework runtime environment is available. This is the case for Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 2008 servers.

In these cases, an installation of the LEX software is not necessary, no DLLs have to be registered or whatever. So you can just copy the executable program file LEX.exe from a station where LEX was installed regularly, eg on a USB stick. Then connect this stick to a computer with .NET Framework 2.0 installed and run the program directly. If you have a valid license, it is best to bring the license file on the USB stick you received with your order, and you can activate the full LEX license when you start the application.

LEX will leave the following tracks on all the computers on which it is running:

Registry:

LEX stores the LDAP browser configuration and license information under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\CerroTorre\LEX.

File System:

LEX stores XML cache data of the browsed directories and LDAP connection profiles on the local user profile in the application data (%APPDATA%), there in the sub directory \LEX.
